12 Days of Disability Awareness Day 9: Visual impairments 🎨

There are around 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss. From these, around 360,000 are registered as blind of partially sighted.

Visual impairments can be caused by multiple things, some might include injury to the eyes, inherited conditions, infections and cataracts.

Once visual impairments have been diagnosed, a user will often have to make changes around their home. We have included a couple of ideas for adaptations below:

- Large button telephones

- Computers with visual impairment adaptations

- Community alarm (portable alarm incase urgent response is needed)

- Bright or adjustable lighting to ensure that chances of accidents are reduced

A lot of visual impairments cannot be treated which can be an extremely stressful and challenging thing to process. There are many charities and organisations who can help with these challenges such as the RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) where they provide information and resources to help.

More charities and further information can also be found on the NHS website.
